Stressed Out: How to Reverse Hair Loss

Posted by Jules Annen on

Let's be honest; we're all stressed out. And while stress is a natural survival mechanism, it's chronic stress, caused by, let's say, an ongoing pandemic, that takes its toll on us physically and emotionally.

One consequence of chronic stress that people are experiencing is hair loss. Whether it is hair that is thinning, falling out, or doesn't seem to be growing at all, hair loss is definitely an unwanted health condition. No one says, oh goody, there goes my hair.

To address this issue, let's first examine what type of hair loss we're dealing with.

Telogen Effluvium (TE)

In telogen effluvium, chronic stress pushes an excess amount of hair follicles into the "resting phase," the phase right before hair sheds. Within a few months, the exogen phase occurs, and the massive amount of affected hairs can fall out when washing or brushing your hair.

Luckily, this type of hair loss is not permanent. If we get our stress under control, we can reverse the negative effects of telogen effluvium.

4 Ways to Reverse Telogen Effluvium

Eat foods rich in the following:

Vitamin B - beans, lentils, sunflower seeds, almonds

Vitamin D - salmon, egg yolks, crimini mushrooms

Zinc - chickpeas, pumpkin seeds, oats, quinoa

Iron - spinach, broccoli, tofu

Tip: Dark leafy greens and water are your best bet to jumpstart your hair growth.

Use hair tools designed to protect the hair from damage:

  • Ceramic surfaces provide even and gentle infrared heat (from the inside out). This prevents “hot spots," which can burn your hair and protects the outside cuticle layer from thermal damage.
Recommendation:  Lava Ceramic 1'' Curling Iron
  • Tourmaline added to the ceramic surface amplifies its properties by generating ions to lock-in moisture. Plus, this specialized ion field technology seals in the hair’s natural oils, which protects your hair from chronic heat exposure.
    Recommendation:  Tourmaline Blowout Brush

  • Titanium plates are smooth and stable at high temperatures, making it a good choice for fine hair, especially keratin-treated hair. Like its tourmaline cousin, titanium relies on infrared heat and negative ion technology.
Tip: When choosing a titanium flat iron, make sure that it is micro-chip controlled to provide constant, uniform, and controllable heat.
    Recommendation:  Nano Titanium Straightening Iron

Use products with ingredients that stimulate the growth cycle like caffeine, biotin, lactic acid, Minoxidil, and Procapil.

I know, easier said than done. Yet there are several simple ways to lower your stress chemicals, resulting in a more robust immune system and preventing your brain from being triggered into a massive shedding event.

  • Get quality sleep (at least 8 hours, uninterrupted)
  • Connect with humans, animals, and nature
  • Practice relaxation techniques -deep breathing, stretching, meditation
  • Do exercises that reach your heart rate goal (subtract your age from 220)
  • Use adaptogens like Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, Panax Ginseng
  • Wake with a grateful heart
